Improve learning achievement for refugee children in primary school
Ensure that schools are safe learning environments for refugee girls and boys and young people
Ensure opportunities for education are live long and available according to need
More than 70.8 million people have had to flee their homes to save their lives.
Like all children, refugee children have the fundamental right to life, survival and development to the maximum extent possible. However, living in exile, refugee children are often denied normal childhoods.
Refugee children in Malaysia are denied access to the formal education system, and thus obtain education via an informal parallel system of 128 community-based learning centres.
UNHCR advocates for refugee children’s access to education, provides financial and material support to the learning centres, support capacity building of teachers through teacher training and compensation, and continued coordination of ad-hoc support towards enhancing access to, and quality of, education for refugees.
- Support for learning centers. Help thousands of refugee children who do not meet the requirements to access the national education system, providing support to the operation and maintenance of 61 learning centers or community schools. These measures include the construction of schools and the renovation or relocation of existing schools.
- Connection of schools to the internet. Ensure that refugees do not fall behind in the digital revolution, providing computer equipment and services. It implies providing Internet access to refugee schools in Malaysia, which will allow teachers to access online resources and use the educational management program to control enrollment, class attendance, student progress and other issues.
- Improvement of learning through extracurricular activities. Provide extracurricular activities to support the child's learning and development. These activities are a way to capture the interest of children and keep them in school, in addition to making them have fun and learn new skills in a safe environment.
